Blue Jays rally to beat Angels with Loperfido, Barger home runs in the ninth inning

Joey Loperfido and Addison Barger proved they have a flair for the dramatic as the Blue Jays pulled off one of their more eventful comebacks of the season on Friday night.
The Jays entered the ninth inning trailing by one run and seemingly on the verge of their 69th loss. That changed with two swings that instead led to their fourth walk-off victory of the year.
Loperfido hit a towering home run to left-centre field to tie the game and Barger followed with a solo shot to secure a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Rogers Centre.
The Jays were playing from behind almost the entire night. After a perfect first inning, right-hander Chris Bassitt allowed four runs in the second as the Angels sent eight batters to the plate while stringing together three hits, a walk and a hit batter.
The Jays’ fortunes began to change in the fourth when they scored a pair of runs after Daulton Varsho led off with a single and Spencer Horwitz doubled to left. Varsho scored on an Alejandro Kirk groundout, while an Ernie Clement single brought home Horwitz.
They added another run in the sixth when Kirk hit an RBI single off Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz.
The score remained 4-3 until Loperfido led off the ninth with a solo homer off reliever Roansy Contreras. The 25-year-old also doubled in the seventh to finish with a two-hit night, his second in as many games. Barger then hit a no-doubter to right that left his bat at 109.6 miles per hour and travelled 439 feet.
Varsho’s two-hit night extended his on-base streak to 21 games, which is the longest active streak in the American League … Rookie Will Wagner finished 0-for-4 as he went hitless for the first time in eight starts … Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (rest) was held out of the Jays’ starting lineup for just the second time this season.
